State seeks death for man who reportedly assaulted, killed Georgia toddler

Prosecutors confirmed on Monday that they’re pushing for the death penalty for a Cedartown, Georgia, man accused of raping and killing a 21-month-old little girl.

FOX News reports that Polk County authorities were dispatched to 45 Adamson Drive in Cedartown on October 28, 2016, where they found the toddler, Ella Grayce Pointer, unresponsive. EMT responders rushed the little girl to Polk Medical Center. She was later airlifted to Children’s Health Care of Atlanta. She passed away in the hospital on October 30.

According to Ella’s grandmother, Joy Shell, hospital staff told family members that the child was beaten, sexually assaulted, and suffered severe head trauma. Authorities charged Dustin Drew Putnal, 27, the boyfriend of the toddler’s mother, with murder, aggravated child molestation, two counts of aggravated sexual battery, and cruelty to children.

“They worked on her, carried her to the hospital… continued to work on her and that’s when they told us that she had sustained major brain injuries. Major organ injuries. Sexual abuse,” said Shell.

Shellby Garner, the child’s mother, was working 3rd shift when the murder occurred. She recalled getting a phone call from authorities in the middle of her work shift, informing her that her little girl was in dire condition.

“She was gone for 30 minutes and they revived her. Her heartbeat was all hers. But she was already gone. Her body was there, but she was already gone.”

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) assisted Polk County authorities with the investigation. Putnal was initially arrested for probation violation, and while in jail, the additional charges were added on. He remains behind bars with no bail. He’s scheduled to return to court in July.
