Man arrested after allegedly running into burning home TWICE to get beer

A Sioux Falls, South Dakota, man ended up behind bars for reportedly running into his burning house twice to “save” two cans of Bud Ice Premium.

Police and firefighters were called to a fire at a multifamily home on Sunday afternoon. While emergency workers attempted to treat other residents for injuries, Michael Casteel, 56, ignored an officer and fire captain’s orders and ran into the building to get beer on two occasions, according to KELO.

Public Information Officer Sam Clemens claimed that Casteel told law enforcement why he was darting back into the burning residence before doing so. The 56-year-old, whose blood alcohol content was supposedly 0.082, was arrested following the second beer run.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze within 10 minutes. According to KDLT, two people were treated for smoke inhalation and another person was taken to the hospital in connection with the incident. Nine people were displaced by the fire. Officials are currently investigating what caused the blaze, KELO also reported.

The Sioux Falls Police Department didn’t find the matter funny, however, and took to Twitter to denounce Casteel’s “incredibly poor judgment” that could have put police and fire crews in danger.

According to court records obtained by The Smoking Gun, the Sioux Falls man has an April 2016 conviction for drunk driving and was arrested on the same charge last month. Prosecutors dismissed a March 2016 charge of felony domestic abuse.

Casteel is currently facing two counts of obstruction and a 24/7 sobriety program violation. The 56-year-old was jailed in the Minnehaha County jail in lieu of $300 bond.
