Police: Middle school teacher kills herself after accusations of sex with a student

A Jefferson County, Colorado, teacher killed herself on Tuesday, amid accusations of having sex with one her middle school students.

CBS Denver reports that Gretchen Krohnfeldt was placed on leave from her teaching position at Drake Middle School on Monday, after the Arvada police and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office began an investigation into the accusations that she had sex with a student. When authorities approached her Arvada home on Tuesday, Krohnfeldt took her own life. So far, it’s unclear how she committed suicide, but her body was found inside her home.

Arvada police said that the victim, now in high school, was a student at Drake Middle School when he allegedly had sex with his teacher. Authorities were alerted to the situation by a staff member at the middle school. The school employee told police that Krohnfeldt engaged in inappropriate behavior with the boy while at school.

Other sources indicated that the student went to Krohnfeldt’s home one more than one occasion for sexual encounters when her husband and three children were not at home.

Grief counselors showed up at the middle school on Wednesday to help students who needed assistance processing the teacher’s death.

Kronhfeldt was a native Arvada resident and had been teaching reading intervention, Social Studies, and English since 1993.
