Police: Two toddlers and a 1-day-old newborn left at home alone in a wooden cage

A Pennsylvania man is behind bars after police say he left his three young children home alone for close to an hour. One of the children was placed in a wooden crate, locked from the outside.

Fox 43 reports that Cecil Eugene Kutz, 39, of Pottsville, is accused of leaving his 1-year-old son, 22-month-old son, and his 1-day-old daughter home alone at their residence on the 300 block of Chestnut Street in Schuylkill County. The children were supposed to be in their father’s care after their mother was admitted to the hospital following childbirth complications.

Schuylkill County City and Youth Services (CYS) and the Schuylkill Haven troopers visited the home as part of a welfare check. When they arrived, they found the 22 month-old locked up in a crate made of plywood and lattice. The 1-year-old was confined to a playpen next to the crate, and the newborn was in a baby seat on the floor. Police said there was no baby formula in the home and it appeared as if the baby had not been fed at all.

Kutz was arrested and charged with three counts of endangering the welfare of a child, along with three counts of reckless endangerment. He’s behind bars at the Schuylkill County Prison with a $250,000 bail.

The newborn was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital for a medical evaluation. All three children were removed from the home and taken into State Police custody.
