Missing teen girl found dead, beaten with metal bat: Police

A 17-year-old Virginia girl was kidnapped and beaten before her body was dumped in a pond, police say.

According to the Washington Post, Nabra Hassanen was walking to the All Dulles Area Muslim Society mosque with a group of friends after breakfast at IHOP early Sunday morning when a suspect in a car confronted them. All of the teens in the group except for Nabra fled into the mosque, where they reported she had been left behind.

“Immediately thereafter, the ADAMS’ personnel notified both Loudoun County and Fairfax County authorities who immediately began an extensive search to locate the missing girl,” the mosque said in a statement.

Investigators found Nabra’s remains in a pond in Sterling Sunday afternoon.

While the police have released few details about the apparent homicide, the girl’s mother told the Washington Post that police said Nabra was hit with a metal bat.

Shortly after Nabra’s body was found, police noticed a man behaving suspiciously in the area and arrested Darwin Martinez Torres, 22, on suspicion of murder.

On Monday morning, the Fairfax County Police posted a message on Twitter saying the apparent murder is not being investigated as a hate crime.

Nabra had just completed her junior year of high school and had been observing Ramadan, the holy month of fasting and prayer.

“I can’t think of a worse instance to occur than the loss of a 17-year-old on Father’s Day, as the father of a 17-year-old myself,” Loudoun County Sheriff Michael L. Chapman told the Washington Post.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
