Former ‘American Idol’ contestant arrested for alleged assault of security guard, but her lawyer tells a different story

Illinois police have arrested former American Idol contestant Haley Reinhart after she allegedly assaulted a security guard at a club in Palatine, as reported by CBS Chicago.

Reinhart, 26, has been charged with a misdemeanor count of battery after police responded to a disturbance call at the Lamplighter Inn Tavern & Grille at around 2 a.m. on Saturday morning. Staff told authorities that Reinhart and friends were asked to leave after allegedly knocking over a table. On the way out, according to restaurant employees, she got into an argument with a security guard, eventually punching him square in the face.

Reinhart was in town visiting family and friends for the July 4 holiday when the altercation allegedly occurred, according to her Facebook page.

Reinhart’s lawyer, however, paints an entirely different picture and claims the 26-year-old was, in fact, the victim. The attorney also accused the club’s security guards of beating one of her friends.

“Without provocation, Haley Reinhart was assaulted by bouncers at the Lamplighter Inn,” her attorney, Dina LaPolt, told PEOPLE. “After forcefully removing Ms. Reinhart, they violently beat her friend, who sustained multiple injuries. We believe that she will be exonerated of all charges once the investigation is completed. We plan on taking legal action against all those who were involved in this unfortunate incident.”

Reinhart, who placed third in the tenth season of American Idol, has been released on her own recognizance. She currently appears as Bill Murphy in the Netflix animated comedy F is for Family.

She is due to appear in court on August 2.
