Prosecutor: Man found with child porn murders woman by stabbing her ‘more than 100 times’

An Illinois man is being prosecuted for allegedly murdering a woman by stabbing her more than 100 times. He’s also been accused of sexually abusing a teenage girl, the Pantagraph reports.

Kyle Brestan, 33, is facing a murder charge in connection with the death of Shannon Hastings, 27, who was found dead in a Bloomington hotel room in May.

Investigators say she was stabbed 105 times and may have been dead for four days before being discovered.

After Brestan was arrested on the murder charge, police located pornographic photos of the underage girl on his phone, according to prosecutors.

He has since been indicted on numerous counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault, aggravated criminal sexual abuse and child pornography. Brestan allegedly met the teenage girl last year via her father’s involvement in a support group that meets at a church.

Brestan’s encounters with the girl span from late March through late May, including a week that she allegedly spent with him during her spring break, according to prosecutors.

The charges show Brestan had contact with the girl and the murdered woman around the same time, the newspaper reports.

Surveillance video shows Brestan riding a bicycle with large red stains on his pants hours after he was last seen with the dead woman, according to prosecutors. Police found a folding knife near the hotel they believe was the murder weapon.

His prior criminal history includes drunken driving and domestic battery.

Brestan has pleaded not guilty in the murder case and is scheduled to be in court on Sept. 1 for a hearing.
