Distraught dad kills himself after toddler accidentally shoots himself in head with loaded gun: Police

After a 2-year-old little boy found a loaded gun in his South Carolina home and accidentally shot himself to death, his father, unable to cope with what happened, took the gun and shot himself in the head.

The State reports that a little after after 11 a.m. on Wednesday, the mother of toddler Kyree Myers called 911 after she found her son in their Columbia home, off of the 2400 block of Truax Lane, with a gunshot wound to his head. Apparently, the 2-year-old located a gun in the home and while playing with it, accidentally pulled the trigger.

When deputies arrived to the home, they found the boy’s father, 38-year-old Keon Myers, with a gun to his head, threatening suicide. Officers repeatedly pleaded for Myers to drop the weapon, but the distraught father shot himself in the head of front of the deputies. Both dad and son were taken to the Palmetto Health Richland Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

According to Columbia Police Chief Skip Holbrook, counselors are offering emotional support to the victims’ family, as well as the officers who witnessed the traumatic incident.

“Our hearts are heavy at the tremendous loss of life. We have victim advocates assigned to the case to assist the family during this difficult time. This experience has also been emotionally trying for responding officers. They will participate in a debriefing to discuss the incident and receive further support as needed.”

It’s still unclear who the gun belonged to.
