Cops catch couple who allegedly murdered 13-day-old baby, mother fled the state [UPDATE]

Police tracked down and arrested a Utah couple who allegedly murdered their newborn infant, as reported by KUTV.

Maria Sullivan, 26, fled to Georgia, authorities noted. The 26-year-old checked into a Cherokee County hospital for an undisclosed reason and staff learned she had an outstanding warrant for her arrest, according to Georgia police spokeswomanm Sgt. Marianne Kelley. She was apprehended by police as she discharged from the hospital and was booked into jail Sunday afternoon.

She faces a first-degree murder charge in Utah for the September 17 death of her 13-day-old baby boy.

The boy’s father, 21-year-old Dylan Kitzmiller, was taken into custody Saturday morning and placed in a Salt Lake County jail, as reported by WKRG. A $1 million arrest warrant was issued for the infant’s parents after an autopsy showed the baby had bruises and abrasions all over his body.

Assistant Medical Examiner Dr. Kacy Krehbiel revealed that the unnamed infant suffered from an injured spinal cord, hemorrhaged blood in the brain and several other horrifying injuries, as previously reported by CrimeOnline.

Kitzmiller has been accused of carrying out the abuse, while Sullivan was charged for reportedly neglecting to inform police or stop the abuse before it ended in the infant’s death.

Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill said the investigators have evidence that Kitzmiller abused the 13-day-old.

“There were statements that the child was being handled roughly by the arm and shoulder. That Kitzmiller would throw the baby up in the air, catch him in the air,” he said. “The girlfriend indicated there was a level of abuse going on. She was aware of this abuse. She took no steps to stop this or to take the child to safety.”

Authorities stated that the child’s father told police that Sullivan did not carry out the abuse, but admitted that they both used heroin in front of the baby on the night he died.

It is also believed that Kitzmiller was abusive to Sullivan, with police noting that the 26-year-old called a friend on the day her son died and said she wanted to flee from the abuse.

Both suspects have been charged with first-degree murder and three felony counts of second-degree child abuse. This is an ongoing investigation.
