Police: Kansas City lawyer gunned down in front of home, possibly by man who lost case

A Kansas City lawyer was shot to death in front of his home on Wednesday morning after walking his kids to school.

The Kansas City Police Department is searching for the killer of Tom Pickert, 39, an attorney, and father of two. His wife was home at the time of the shooting, which occurred around 8 a.m.

Neighbor Pete Corpeny told FOX 4 he heard screaming coming from the home, but it was his son who heard the gunshots.

“He heard shots, he heard several shots he said but then he heard the scream too, it was a woman, and here I thought it was kids screaming.”

Police said a white van that was seen leaving the scene, registered to a man named David Jungerman.

Jungerman was sued in civil court in 2012 by a homeless man who he shot because the man allegedly broke into his business. The man ended up losing a leg and sued Jungerman, winning around $6 million in compensatory and punitive damages.

Pickert, a personal injury attorney at Fowler Pickert Eisenmenger, LLC, represented the homeless man in the case.

Jungerman’s property was being seized last week. Court officials took his home and his business.

Police have not made it clear if Jungerman or someone else was driving the van at the time of the shooting.

They tracked the van down around 5 p.m. Wednesday, but no one was in it.
