A 1-year-old Massachusetts girl was seriously injured this weekend after the family’s pit bull terrier mauled her as she played in the kitchen, according to police.
The Boston Herald reported that police were called to the Falmouth home Sunday morning following reports of a dog attack. Police said the attack was “unprovoked” as the dog grabbed the infant by her face as she played feet away from her father.
Police claimed the father attempted to separate the pair before grabbing a pistol and realizing that it wasn’t loaded. From there, he grabbed a knife and fatally stabbed the canine.

Arriving crews rushed the child to Falmouth Hospital, where she was then airlifted to a Boston-area hospital, according to WBZ-TV. WFXT reported that the 1-year-old has had blood transfusions and underwent surgery.
Though she’s expected to stay in the hospital for several weeks, doctors are reportedly hopeful about the baby’s recovery.
Relatives also told the local news station that the family has had the dog for five years and it showed no sign of aggression in that time.
“Never seen the dog aggressive in any such way. On a couple occasions my dog got loose and ran over to his dog and it never showed any aggression. It seemed like a normal pet dog,” neighbor Anne Mello told WBZ-TV.
Local police said they are investigating Sunday’s incident.
