Steve Wilkos, busted for DUI, flips car and smashes into poles and tree: Police

Television show host and former bodyguard on “The Jerry Springer Show,” Steve Wilkos, was arrested for DUI last month in Darien, Connecticut. On Wednesday, he reportedly admitted that he suffered from “bouts of depression,” which led to drinking.

People reports that on January 21, Wilkos, 53, allegedly crashed his car on West Ave. while drinking and driving. Police didn’t immediately arrest the suspect, but rather, he turned himself in a few days later after learning there was a warrant out for his arrest.

Prior to turning himself in, Wilkos was transported to local hospital for minor injuries after flipping his car while hitting several poles and a tree in the process. Medical professionals gave Wilkos a blood alcohol test, which reportedly registered at .29%. Police later obtained the suspect’s medical records as part of the investigation.

TMZ reports that Wilkos admitted that he was reaching for his glasses when the accident occurred. He reportedly said that he’s been battling depression for most of his life, which apparently led to drinking.

“Over the course of my life, I have been struggling with bouts of depression and on the day of my accident, I had a complete lapse in judgment which resulted in me drinking and getting behind the wheel of my car.”

“This experience reinforces my commitment to get the professional help that I need and I have recently completed an intensive medically supervised program,” Wilkos continued.

Wilkos’ next hearing is scheduled for March 5 at the Stamford Superior Court. Check back with CrimeOnline as additional details become available.
