An Alabama man was fatally shot this week as he tried to prevent his father from committing suicide, according to police.
AL.com reported that the unnamed father was trying to end his life Thursday night in Hayden when one of his sons attempted to intervene. Blount County Sheriff’s Office Operations Commander Tim Kent said the gun discharged during the struggle, with the bullet traveling through one of the sons’ hand before striking the other son in the chest.
The sons, ages 21 and 23, were transported to the hospital where one of them died early Friday. The deceased victim’s name isn’t being released at this time, according to the paper. The other son’s injuries are not considered life-threatening, WBMA reported.

Kent told KBRC that neither of the shooting victims were the father’s biological children and were possibly adopted.
Reports indicated that the father was detained for questioning. KBRC reported that evidence from Thursday’s fatal shooting will be delivered to the district attorney’s office and grand jury to determine whether charges will be filed.
