Defense lawyers for a New York man accused of murdering his girlfriend argued in a Manhattan court on Friday that the victim had an affair with her famous actor grandfather, Morgan Freeman.
New York Daily News reports that lawyers for Lamar Davenport, who’s currently on trial for the 2015 murder of Freeman’s step-granddaughter, E’Dena Hines, 33, claimed that Hines carried out an illicit sexual affair with Morgan, then shared the information with her then-boyfriend, Davenport, among others.
“E’Dena Hines disclosed to Lamar Davenport and others that her grandfather engaged in a sexually inappropriate relationship with her,” Davenport’s attorney Annie Costanzo said.
It’s still unclear how the alleged relationship has anything to do with the current murder trial. The defense team didn’t provide further explanation, aside from a therapists’s testimony who indicated Davenport and Hines argued often over cheating and infidelity.
However, this isn’t the first time the reported clandestine relationship rumors have surfaced. Starting around 2009, publications began posting speculations that the now 80-year-old actor carried out a sexual relationship with his granddaughter for several years.
Hines was murdered in Manhattan in 2015, allegedly at the hands of Davenport.
As CrimeOnline previously reported, a witness who saw Hines take her last breath took the stand last week and recalled the horrifying ordeal. Cristina Aviles, 22, said she and her friends were too frightened to interfere as they watched Davenport repeatedly stab Hines as he straddled her on the ground on 162nd Street in Washington Heights. The incident occurred at around 2:50 a.m. on August 16, 2015.
“They were arguing. She was on the [ground], and he was on top of her, restraining her, stopping her from getting loose from his grip,” Aviles testified. “I proceeded to call the cops. He was yelling things about releasing the devil out of her. And then he pulled out a knife.”
Avile also said that the suspect raised the knife to his forehead each time before stabbing Davenport in her back repeatedly. As Hines turned over while trying to escape, the suspect allegedly stabbed her in the chest and neck.
“She was on her stomach, and then she somehow flipped over, and he stabbed her on the chest. She was trying to get away from him by pushing him and kicking him…..And then he stopped after she was still.”
While lying on the ground dying, Hines asked one question to Davenport, according to Aviles.
“Why are you doing this?”
Aviles said she was afraid Davenport would start stabbing her as well if he stepped in, so instead she called 911. When the dispatched asked her to perform CPR on Hines, she explained Davenport was still on top of the victim.

Freeman adopted Hines’ after he married Jeannette Adair Bradshaw, the victim’s grandmother. He continued to help raise Hines’ after he divorced Bradshaw in 1979. Freeman’s second wife, Myrna Colley-Lee, formally adopted Hines during her marriage to Freeman.
“The world will never know her artistry and talent, and how much she had to offer,” the actor said when learning Hines passed away.
