A North Carolina woman already convicted of murder was sentenced to additional prison time for the gruesome manner in which she disposed of a victim’s body: Cutting it into pieces and feeding it to alligators.
WHIO-TV reports that Amanda Hayes and her husband Grant Ruffin Hayes III had previously been convicted of murdering Grant’s ex-girlfriend Laura Ackerson. Grant and Laura, 27, had reportedly been in a dispute over the custody of their two children at the time of the young woman’s murder.
In 2014, Grant Hayes was convicted of first-degree murder for the death of Laura Ackerson, who exact cause of death remains unknown, as her killers dismembered the body and attempted to feed the body parts to alligators, according to a report in WRAL. Amanda Hayes was convicted of second-degree murder.
Ackerson was murdered in North Carolina, but the couple reportedly drove her dismembered body to Texas before attempting to feed the body part to alligators.
“…the couple first attempted to use muriatic acid to destroy Ackerson’s body … When that didn’t work, they took a boat onto Oyster Creek and dumped Laura’s body parts into the water with hopes that alligators would eat her remains.” Fort Bend County District Attorney’s office said in a press release about the case in 2014.

Amanda Hayes has previously been sentenced to 13 to 16 years in prison for her second-degree murder conviction. She was given an additional 20 years behind bars after she was convicted of tampering with evidence in an attempt to cover up the crime. The sentences will be served concurrently, according to WHIO-TV.
