Update: Teen involved in active shooter incident at middle school died from self-inflicted gunshot wound after ‘exchanging shots’ [Police]

Additional details are emerging after a call to an active shooter case at an Indiana middle school Thursday morning, that left one student dead.

CBS4 reports that a teen male apparently killed himself at Dennis Intermediate School, located at 222 NW 7th St. in Richmond. According to police, the teen shot himself, causing fatal injuries. Sgt. John Bowling with Indiana State Police said authorities arrived to the scene quickly, before any other students were harmed, after receiving an early morning tip.

“Officers received information this morning that there could possibly be someone en route to commit a violent act at Dennis Intermediate School here in Richmond. Officers responded rapidly. They did confront a suspect outside the school. Shots were exchanged, and the teen suspect decided to take his own life. [No one was hurt] mainly because someone knew something, and they said something. They warned police and police were able to respond. The school was able to follow procedures to help protect students.”

The middle school is now secure and students are currently being transferred to the nearby Richmond High School, where parents can pick them up in the Civic Hall building.
