‘They found her in a bath of blood, stabbed to death and beat up’: Beloved musician murdered while studying abroad [Reports]

A beloved Minnesota musician was allegedly murdered Wednesday by her roommate while studying abroad in the Netherlands, authorities announced Friday.

Citing police, CBS Minnesota reported that 21-year-old Sarah Papenheim, of Andover, was apparently stabbed to death by her unidentified 23-year-old male roommate. Papenheim was a student at Erasmus University in Rotterdam, where she studied psychology.

Authorities in the Netherlands said they were summoned to the victim’s apartment Wednesday after “neighbors heard fighting and screaming,” according to the news outlet. Upon arrival, they reportedly discovered Papenheim “unconscious, in a pool of blood.” Life-saving measures were taken, however, the musician succumbed to her injuries at the scene of the crime, police said.

“They found her in a bath of blood, stabbed to death and beat up and stabbed for no reason, but trying to be his friend,” the victim’s mother, Donee Odegard, told FOX 9.

Officials said the suspect attempted to flee, but was discovered by police as he stepped off a train approximately 60 miles away, in Eindhoven. He was subsequently taken into custody, according to authorities.

Odegard told the news station that her daughter complained of the man having “highs and lows” while residing with him.

“…She noticed that and I told her she needed to get out of there because something ain’t right,” Odegard said.

In a tragic twist, a friend of Papenheim, Jellybean Johnson, told CBS that the woman’s focused area of study abroad was suicide. He said the woman grieved the loss of her brother, who apparently killed himself only a few years prior.

“She went there, you know, to start a new thing because her brother committed suicide three years ago,” Johnson said.

The friend recalled Papenheim’s impressive musical talents.

“I liked her because she hit the drums just as hard as guys did,” Johnson said. “So I nicknamed her ‘Thumper.’”

Authorities in Rotterdam told KSTP the investigation is ongoing.

“This is obviously a very, very tragic case,” Ekkers said. “We are somewhat happy we could arrest the suspect so soon, but that’s only a small drop in the pain that the family must feel. So our thoughts are with them.”
