Police reports indicate the officers responded to the scene of the shooting shortly after 8 p.m. following a robbery report at the location. Upon arrival, they spotted a car believed to belong to the suspect and approached, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
“Please keep our officers and their families in your thoughts and prayers at this time,” the Savannah Police Department said in a statement. “We want to thank the community for their continued support.”
In addition to the two officers, the suspect was also fatally shot. He was transported to an area hospital where he died a short time later.
The injured officer was treated and has been released from the hospital, as reported by Fox News.
Local resident Stephen Facea said he was in the area at the time of the shooting and “heard about six shots go off.”
The sounds were soon followed by “two cop cars racing” down the street, he said.
