Baby ripped from womb of murdered pregnant teen opens his eyes for the first time: Report

The infant who was cut from the womb after his mother was brutally strangled has opened his eyes for the first time, nearly a month after the day Marlen Ochoa-Lopez was killed.

As CrimeOnline previously reported, authorities believe that 19-year-old Ochoa-Lopez was lured to the home of Clarisa Figueroa after the 43-year-old woman offered her baby supplies. Clarisa and her daughter Desiree reportedly distracted the young woman with a photo album of Clarisa’s deceased son before Clarisa allegedly strangled Ochoa-Lopez with a cable. They then “forcibly removed” the baby from the dead woman’s body before disposing of her remains in a garbage can.

Both women are now charged with first-degree murder.

The elder suspect reportedly called 911 to claim she had given birth to a baby who was not breathing. That infant, who Ochoa-Lopez’s family has named Yovanny Jardiel, is reportedly on life support in a Chicago hospital. Earlier reports indicated the newborn did not have much chance of survival.

But NBC Chicago now reports that a family spokesperson has said that the baby has opened his eyes for the first time. He reportedly remains in critical condition on life support.

As ABC 7 reports, the family is questioning why staff at Advocate Christ Medical Center apparently failed to notify authorities that the woman claiming to be the baby’s mother did not show indications of having given birth. As CrimeOnline previously reported, a Department of Children and Family Services spokesperson said that the agency was not notified about the infant until May 9.

The Cook County Sheriff’s Department is reportedly considering an investigation.

“We will ask DCFS to advise if this unspeakably tragic set of facts was reportable by a mandated reporter,” the department said in a statement obtained by ABC 7.

“If they determine it was, we will ensure it is immediately investigated.”
