A razor blade found in a sandwich when a New York police office bit into it made its way there by accident, Commissioner Dermot Shea said on Saturday.
The New York Post reported that the on-duty plainclothes officer got the tainted sandwich from Bon Appetit Specialty Food Store in Queens. The officer was briefly hospitalized for a small cut in his mouth.
According to NBC 4 New York, razor blades were left behind after construction work in the shop. A spokeswoman did not provide details.
“After a thorough investigation by @NYPDDetectives it’s been determined that the razor incident was indeed an accident-thankfully our officer or another customer wasn’t seriously injured,” Shea said in a tweet. “Appropriate agencies have been notified for follow up to ensure this never happens again.”

In a statement issued to the news station, management from the Bon Appetit Specialty Food Store said they will cooperate with the NYPD’s ongoing investigation.
“In our experience, the NYPD officers of the 100th and 101st precincts have been an exemplary example of professionalism and service to not only our business but to our local community in the Rockaways, Queens, and New York City at large. If given the opportunity, the management of Bon Appetit would like to personally apologize to the officer and the rest of the local law enforcement community.”
