Police officer dead, more officers and civilians among victims of Jersey City shooting: Report

One police officer was killed and a second was injured in a dramatic shootout in Jersey City, New Jersey, on Tuesday.

As the New York Times reports. the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office announced on Twitter Tuesday afternoon that an officer had been fatally shot. Two other officers and one civilian were reportedly injured, but are in stable condition.

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased or injured officers. According to multiple earlier reports, one police officer was shot in the head in a cemetary as they responded to the scene of an active shooting. A shooter or shooters eventually moved to or near a bodega, and ABC 7 had earlier reported that two suspects had been “neutralized,” but further details are not known.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Associated Press reported that “multiple” people had died. It is possible that shooting suspects are among the dead, but authorities have not confirmed the condition or custody status of the shooters.

New Jersey Governor Phillip Murphy released a statement obtained by the New York Times.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the men and women of the Jersey City Police Department, especially with the officers shot during this standoff, and with the residents and schoolchildren currently under lockdown.”
