‘Nobody actually saw her on her bicycle’: Questions persist amid changing reports on the investigation into Suzanne Morphew’s Mother’s Day disappearance

The investigation into the disappearance of Colorado mother continues as a new report indicates that authorities are searching her home in Maysville.

On Wednesday, the Daily Mail published photos of what appeared to be investigators carrying bags of evidence near Morphew’s home, along with a photo of a Chaffee County Sheriff Crime Scene Investigation van. The report does not say exactly when the photos were taken, but states that authorities were searching the Maysville home on Tuesday.

On Tuesday evening, Colorado news station KDVR reported that authorities were searching Morphew’s home, but corrected the report after the Public Information Officer representing the Chaffee County Sheriff’s office told a reporter at another local station that investigators were not actively searching the home.

Reached by CrimeOnline on Wednesday, the PIO would not disclose whether or not authorities were searching or had searched the home, saying she would not discuss specifics of the open investigation. The PIO reiterated that the home was being “held” as part of the investigation and confirmed that Morphew’s family members are not staying there.

According to sources who spoke to the Daily Mail, Morphew’s daughters contacted a neighbor when they were unable to reach her. The report identifies the neighbor who ultimately called police to report Morphew missing as Jeanne Ritter, 70, who declined an interview with the news outlet. According to numerous local reports, the neighbor told police that Morphew had not returned from a bike ride.

A woman identified as the stepmother of Morphew’s daughter’s best friend said that the homes in the remote central Colorado town are far apart. It remains unclear how long Morphew had been out of contact before the neighbor alerted Chaffee County authorities on May 10. The sheriff’s department launched an immediate search for Morphew on that day.

“The neighbors up there are spread pretty far apart but the only reason they found out [she was missing] is because the girls called the neighbors and said, ‘we never heard from Mom – can you go check on her?'” the friend’s stepmother said

“Nobody actually saw her on her bicycle, sadly.”

Morphew’s nephew Trevor Noel told a local news station last week that authorities had found Morphew’s bike on May 10, the day she went missing. Authorities have not confirmed this. According to the Daily Mail report, sources said that Morphew’s bike was found on a bridge near her home.

The missing woman’s husband Barry Morphew was reportedlly out of town for work on May 10, which was Mother’s Day. Family sources had previously said that he was in Denver, and the Daily Mail reports that the husband said he was at a volunteer fighter training course, but it is unclear who provided that information to the Daily Mail.

Barry Morphew’s Facebook profile lists his occupation as a firefighter, and he is also believed to work in landscaping. The family lived in Indiana until about two years ago when they moved to Colorado.

This past weekend, Barry Morphew released a video statement appealing for the safe return of his wife.

“We love you. We miss you. The girls need you. No questions asked. However much they want, I will do whatever it takes to get you back. Honey, I love you. I want you back so bad,” Barry Morphew says in the video.

Authorities have not named any suspects or persons of interest in the investigation, and continue to ask the public for tips.
