The Madison County prosecutor unsealed the arrest affidavit for Chad Daybell, the husband of Lori Vallow who is facing charges of obstruction or concealment after the bodies of his stepchildren were found in his backyard.
Fox 10 Phoenix reporter Justin Lum obtained the affidavit and shared pages of it in a series of Twitter posts.
According to the documents, investigators traced Lori Vallow’s now-deceased brother Alex Cox through cell phone pings to Daybell’s property on two separate occasions: September 9, 2019; the morning after Tylee Ryan was last seen alive with Cox, Vallow, and 7-year-old JJ Vallow at Yellowstone National Park; and the morning of September 23, 2019; the day after JJ was last seen alive.
The documents also show a text message exchange between Chad Daybell and his wife Tammy Daybell on September 9.
“Well I’ve had an interesting morning!” Daybell wrote to his wife, according to the documents.
“I felt I should burn all of the limb debris by the fire pit before it got too soaked by the coming storms. While I did so, I spotted a big raccoon along the fence. I hurried and got my gun, and he was still walking along. I got close enough that one shot did the trick. He is now in our pet cemetery. Fun times!”
He sent a second message a few minutes later, saying, “Gonna shower now and then write for a little while at BYU. Love you!”
A couple of hours later, Tammy replied, “Good for you!,” and Chad told her that he was now back at home.
The reporter noted in a Twitter post that Daybell’s mention of “limb debris” may have been intended to reference tree limbs.
Tammy Daybell died on October 19 at the home in Salem. Authorities exhumed her body in December but have not released the results of her autopsy report.
Cox’s phone is at CD’s home until around 11:40. Then he went to Del Taco before going back to his apt.

The documents show that Alex Cox went to Del Taco later in the morning of September 9, after spending around two hours at Daybell’s property, although the cell phone data shows he may have been in the town of St. Anthony, about five miles away, for a brief period before returning to Daybell’s home.
According to the affidavit, Vallow’s friend Melanie Gibb told police that she and her boyfriend David Warwick had visited Lori Vallow in Rexburg on September 19. During that time, Lori repeatedly said that JJ was acting like a “zombie,” though Gibb said she did not notice any unusual behavior.
Warwick told police that on the night of September 22, he, Gibb, and Vallow were recording a podcast, and JJ was acting up, so he went to Alex Cox’s apartment in the same complex. Later that night, he said he saw Cox carrying JJ, who appeared to be asleep, with his head resting on Cox’s shoulder.
Gibb and Warwick never saw JJ again. On the morning of September 23, Alex Cox’s cell phone was again traced to Chad Daybell’s property. But this time, he was there for less than 20 minutes.
The documents also described the discovery of human remains, along with animals remains, on Daybell’s property earlier this month. The notes in the affidavit indicate that one body was found intact and wrapped tightly in plastic, and another set of human remains appeared to be burned.
