“This is a nightmare for any parent and I can’t imagine the pain with which they’re dealing this morning. The boy was asleep. Malicious shooting with no regard for others claims another innocent life in our city,” Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas tweeted.

Fox 4 reports that family members identified the child as 4-year-old Legend M. Taliferro.

Investigators said that based on preliminary evidence, the shooting does not appear at this point to have been random.

Anyone with information regarding the incident should contact Kansas City homicide detectives at 234-5043 or TIPS Hotline at 474-TIPS.
