Two young children have been found dead in a Las Vegas apartment, leading to the arrest of their mother, KVVU-TV reports.
Authorities on Friday received a call around 12:15 p.m. about two unresponsive children, according to KTNV-TV. Officers found a 1-year-old child and a 2-month-old baby inside a residence in the central part of the city.
“The father of the children came home and noticed that both children were in the corner of the living room,” Lt. Ray Spencer told KVVU-TV. “Both children were cold and were obviously deceased. There was a conversation between him and the mother, and at that point he called 911 and police arrived.”
Police arrested the children’s mother, who is in her late 20s. She was to be booked on two counts of open murder, Spencer told the television station.
Officers tried to give medical aid to the victims but the children were pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators believe they know what caused the death of the youngest child, but Spencer said during a press conference on Friday it was not immediately clear what caused the death of the older child.
Officials are waiting on the Clark County Coroner to conduct autopsies before releasing any further details about the causes of death, KSNV-TV reported.
Spencer said during the press conference that he did not know why the mother allegedly killed the children, but that investigators were attempting to speak with her and others.
“The father is extremely upset,” Spencer told reporters during the press conference. “It’s a horrific scene that officers are dealing with right now.”
Given the fact that children are the victims in the case, the police department has made counselors available to employees involved in the investigation.
“I think it impacts everybody that’s out here on the scene right now,” Spencer told reporters.
