Update: Father and Son Dead After Virginia High School Graduation Ceremony Shooting, Teen in Custody

Two people are dead and several others injured after a shooting Tuesday following a high school graduation in Richmond, Virginia, according to police.

As CrimeOnline previously reported, police said the incident happened at a Huguenot High School graduation, inside the Altria Theater. On Tuesday afternoon, VCU Police issued an alert regarding a shooting incident near Monroe Park.

The park, located on the VCU campus in downtown Richmond, is home to the theater, where Richmond Public Schools hold their high school graduation ceremonies. Witnesses said the shooting was reported as the graduation ceremony was drawing to a close.

ABC reports that a 19-year-old suspect has been taken into custody, while Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards stated that the shooter knew at least one of the victims.

The victims who passed away have been identified as Renzo Smith, 36, and his 18-year-old son, Sean Jackson. Four adults and a 14-year-old boy were also shot; two of the four remain in the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Numerous others were treated for minor injuries and anxiety.

Police added that the suspect had numerous weapons on him and is expected to be charged with two counts of second-degree murder, according to Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney, who called the shooting a “selfish, senseless act.”
