Woman gives birth day after boyfriend tries to kill her and unborn baby

Boyfriend charged with attempted murder of an unborn child

A North Carolina man is behind bars after police say he attempted to kill his eight-months pregnant girlfriend and her unborn child by shooting her in the stomach. The next day, the woman gave birth.

According to WNCN, the shooting occurred just after 5 a.m. on March 28 at an apartment complex in Lexington. Upon arrival, police located a 27-year-old woman suffering from a gunshot wound inside of the apartment.
The victim, identified by police as Raven Cauthen, was transported to an area hospital where she underwent surgery and hours later gave birth to her baby, according to WXii12. Both mother and child are reportedly in stable condition.
According to The-Dispatch.com, the victim’s 2-year-old child was also present at the time of the shooting, though police said that child was not injured.
Shortly after the shooting, an adult male driving a 2000 Mitsubishi Gallant reportedly fled from the apartment complex and led officers on a mile-long chase, according to a Lexington Police Department press release. The driver, 27-year-old Mondrail Jumar Woodberry, was taken into custody after crashing the vehicle.

Police said Woodberry and the victim were in a relationship and lived at the apartment together.

Authorities have not said what led to the alleged shooting. There had not been any previous domestic violence calls at the residence since they’ve lived there, according to a press release.

Woodberry was arrested on numerous charges including attempted murder, attempted murder of an unborn child, assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, possession of a firearm by a felon, felony speeding to elude, driving with an evoked license, and felony possession of cocaine.

The suspect is being held at the Davidson County Jail on $705,000 bond and is expected to appear in court on April 11.
