Police: Washington ‘mom’ who left baby on yard faces charges

Taking drugs apparently made the baby’s mother think something or someone was chasing her

The “mom” who left her 3-month-old on the lawn in front of a stranger’s home on Monday in Lakewood, Washington is expected to face criminal charges.

Lakewood Police Lt. Chris Lawler said that the mother of the baby admitted that she took drugs at a home in the area on Sunday night, when she became paranoid, likely an effect from the drugs she was on. She grabbed her baby and started running, in fear of something imaginary chasing her. She left the infant in the front yard, hoping that someone would see him and take care of him. The father of the baby told authorities that he hadn’t seen his son since Sunday night, after arguing with the baby’s mother.

The baby was found lying in the grass of a front yard with no blanket, carseat, or anything else besides a blue and green-striped onesie he was wearing. At around 1:30 a.m. on Monday, someone happened to walk by, noticing a sound coming from the yard. After looking closer, the person discovered the crying baby and called 911. The baby was taken to the hospital, and aside from being a little cold, was in good health with no physical injuries. He was taken into custody of Children’s Services.

The story is developing. Check back later as additional details become available.
