Venus Williams at fault in fatal car wreck: Police

Police have said that tennis superstar Venus Williams is responsible for a car accident that took a man’s life earlier this month.

TMZ reports that Jerome Barson, 78, was a passenger in a car that hit Williams’s SUV when her vehicle was in an intersection against a traffic signal. Barson’s wife, the driver, reportedly told police that the SUV suddenly darted into the intersection as she was driving through it with the right of way, and T-boned the car.

Williams reportedly told police that she had gotten stuck in the intersection when traffic ahead of her slowed down.

Barson was taken to the hospital with head injuries and died in the ICU two weeks later.

According to the police report obtained by TMZ, “[Williams] is at fault for violating the right of way of [the other driver].”

Police reportedly said there was no evidence that Williams was under the influence at the time of the accident, or was distracted by a phone or other device.

The TMZ report does not indicate whether Williams is expected to face any charges.
