A Long Island man is under arrest on suspicion of murder after he allegedly beat his own relatives to death at his mother’s home in Hempstead.

NBC 4 reports that Bobby Vanderhall, 34, is in custody after he allegedly broke into his mother’s house through the basement with a hammer early Saturday.  Nassau County homicide Lt. Stephen Fitzpatrick told the news station that Vanderhall then went into the kitchen and beat his mother, Lynn Vanderhall, killing her.

His 29-year-old sister Melissa Vanderhall were reportedly on a staircase in the home when he attacked both of them with the hammer. The friend escaped and ran for help, but Melissa was killed.

Vanderhall then reportedly beat and killed a third woman, another friend, who was in an upstairs bedroom at the time. That victim has been identified as 29-year-old Janel Simpson. Her father told the news station that she had worked late at her job at Northwell Health and went over to her visit her friend.

According to NBC 4, the suspect had been kicked out of his mother’s home and was homeless at the time of the triple murder.

Police apprehended Vandherall less than two miles from his home, reportedly finding him asleep in his car.

He has a previous arrest record, including sexual abuse and DWI charges. He is being held on three counts of second-degree murder and one count of attempted murder and is expected to be arraigned on Sunday.

Meanwhile, relatives of the murdered family are reeling.

“The family right now is distraught,” Juanita Johnson, a cousin, told NBC 4. “We in shock.”
