Police: Former teacher charged with sodomizing, raping high school boy

A former Alabama high school teacher is behind bars for reportedly performing “sexual acts” with one her students.

Al.com reports that authorities arrested Sonya Ann Wilks Bailey, 51, on Monday and charged her with second-degree sodomy, second-degree rape, and one count of a “school employee engaging in a sex act with a student.”

Bailey, a former commerce and information technology teacher at West End High School in Etowah County, reportedly started sending the student sexually explicit text messages, which eventually led to “sexual acts” with the teen boy. Upon her arrest, Etowah County Superintendent, Dr. Alan Cosby, issued a statement that the school accepted Bailey’s resignation.

“Mrs. Bailey resignation was accepted by the Etowah County Board of Education on August 28th. Her resignation was accepted after these allegations came to light. We are fully cooperating with the Sheriff’s Office and District Attorney’s Office in this case.”

So far, there aren’t many details on exactly when, where, or how the alleged incident occurred. Etowah County Sheriff, Todd Entrekin, called the teacher’s reported actions “ridiculous.”

“This type of ridiculous behavior is completely uncalled for by someone who was trusted by the community to teach our kids.”

Bailey was booked into the Etowah County Detention Center on a $60,000 property bond. A stipulation of her bond states she must have no contact with the victim and his family and must report to the Community Corrections.
