Mom neglects disabled son’s desperate need for medical help until he ultimately dies: Police

An Austin woman was arrested on Thursday after she allegedly caused the death of her adult son with cerebral palsy after “severe neglect,” according to police.

KXAN reports that authorities were called to a home off of Prince Drive in Austin on June 20 at around 10 p.m., after a young man with cerebral palsy, Edgar Carbajal, 26, was found deceased. A Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office investigator and a detective arrived at the home to question his mother, 41-year-old Erica Yanet Flores.

After investigating the victim’s death, authorities discovered that Carbajal likely suffered from neglect, leading to his death. An autopsy confirmed that he developed and died from pneumonia caused by bacteria in his blood. Bacteria formed in his system after the victim was left for a prolonged period of time with pressure ulcers.

Detectives are treating the victim’s death as a homicide. Flores was arrested and charged one with felony count of injury to a disabled individual by omission. She was booked into the Travis County Jail on a $75,000 bond.

The investigation is still ongoing. Anyone with any information is urged to contact the police tip line at 512-477-3588 or contact Crime Stoppers at 512-472-TIPS.
