Airport worker caught red-handed opening passengers’ bags and stealing items: Police

Authorities say an employee of a baggage handling company was caught on surveillance camera rifling through passengers’ bags and taking items.

New York Post reports that police arrested Abdullah Hayee Mayeh, 27, for theft after the surveillance camera reportedly caught him taking items from passengers’ bags while at the Phuket International Airport in Thailand on Oct. 12. Mayeh allegedly stole items from bags that were underneath a Jetstar plane, in the luggage compartment.

The video somehow made its way online and went viral, catching the attention of Jetstar officials, who released the following statement to news.com.au.

“Jetstar is aware of a video circulating online and we are taking the matter very seriously. We have launched an immediate investigation and will work with Airports of Thailand, our ground handler BAGS and our local security company to ensure the security of our customers’ property on-board our flights.”

Mayeh works for BAGS, a business that provides baggage handling to close to 100 airports across the world.

Once confronted with the surveillance video, Mayeh allegedly confessed to stealing items from bags. According to the Mirror, officials are reportedly trying to match the stolen items to the owners. It’s unclear if Mayeh is still employed with BAGS.
