Boy jumps from overpass in reported suicide attempt; survives but kills woman driver after landing on her SUV

A Maryland woman is dead after a 12-year-old boy jumped from an overpass in Virginia, in an alleged attempt to end his own life.

NBC Washington reports that 22-year-old Marisa Harris, of Olney, Maryland, was driving a 2005 Ford Escape along eastbound I-66 in Virginia on Saturday when the boy threw himself off of the Cedar Lane overpass near Nutley Street. The boy landed on Harris’ vehicle, smashing through the windshield, incapacitating her. Her boyfriend, riding passenger and uninjured, steered the car to the shoulder of the road.

According to Virginia State Police, Harris was pronounced dead at the scene. The boy was rushed to Inova Fairfax Hospital with life-threatening injuries. He remains unnamed due to his age.

Harris was a graduate student Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia, where she studied clinical counseling, according to her mother. She completed her undergraduate degree at Towson University in Towson, Maryland, where she graduated summa cum laude.

“She was caring — I mean she had an absolute love for children,” Harris’s mother, Leigh Miller, told the Washington Post.

“She was fearless, she was absolutely fearless,” Harris’ father added. “She was loved by her friends, she was dearly loved by her family, she was admired by her peers, she was just a shining star.”
