Teen accused of stabbing recent high school graduate had ‘kill list’ intending to target more victims

Police say a 15-year-old Colorado boy accused of fatally stabbing another teenager had a “kill list” indicating he planned to murder more victims.

According to KDVR, the teen was arrested early Sunday morning after police were called to an apartment where the victim, who reportedly graduated from high school in 2016, had been stabbed. She was alive when police arrived but later died in the hospital.

Police say they found a “kill list” in the teen’s bedroom, which featured his victim, Makayla Grote, as the second name from the top. The first name was Makayla’s sister, but notes on the list indicated that anyone in the family would suffice, KDVR reports.

The teen was reportedly just a mile away from the third person on his list when police took him into custody.

Prosecutors said Monday in court that the teen knocked on Grote’s door at 11 a.m. Saturday and asked for a jump for his car. When he returned, Grote answered the door and he allegedly stabbed her, then chased her sister through the house. The sister was able to run into a room and lock the door to escape the killer.

A neighbor said he heard a “thud” outside of his door and looked outside to see Grote lying on the ground. He yelled for someone to call 911, then saw the killer, who started coming towards him. He said he ran to get his gun to protect his child, but the killer ran off.

The teen, who remains unidentified because he is a juvenile, remains jailed. Prosecutors are reportedly still determining whether to charge him as an adult or juvenile. He will return to court on Wednesday.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the family pay for Grote’s funeral expenses.
