‘Mom’ poisons her three young kids after ex gains full custody: Police

A Kansas mother is behind bars on an attempted capital murder charge after she allegedly tried to poison her three young children on Monday, shortly before they were to go back to their father’s home.

The Kansas City Star reports that authorities arrived to a home on Monday night, off of the 1700 block of N. Lennox St. in Olathe, in response to three children in need of medical attention. The suspect, Therese Roever, 37, allegedly admitted to police when they arrived that her kids, a 9-year-old boy and girl (twins) and a 7-year-old boy, swallowed something “meant to harm them.”

The children’s father, John Roever, according to court documents, banged on the Roever’s door numerous times on Monday night with no answer, prompting a call to the police. Court documents indicate that Therese Roever lost custody of the children in November 2017 after a bitter custody battle that began shortly after the couple split up in late 2016. She was granted unsupervised visits, while John Roever was granted full custody.

Therese Roever is accused of poisoning the three kids out of resentment toward her ex, although it’s still unclear exactly she allegedly poisoned them with. Testing is currently underway to determine what harmed the children, which is pending while authorities await lab results.

Authorities rushed the children to the hospital in serious condition, but all three are expected to survive.

“Thankfully the children are recovering and should be returning home very soon,” John Roever’s lawyer said.

The suspect is currently behind bars on $1 million bond. Check back with CrimeOnline as additional details become available.
