Dad charged with killing son, more than two decades after abusing him

A father has been charged with the murder of his son — more than 20 years after causing the injury believed to have later caused his death.

According to the Associated Press, Lucius Middlebrook confessed to shaking his son, then two months old, in 1996. His son, Cavelle Mena, suffered a traumatic brain injury as a result of the abuse, which caused complications throughout his life,

After Mena died in 2015, a medical examination determined that the brain injury he suffered in 1996 ultimately caused his death. The specific circumstances of Mena’s death are not yet known.

Middlebrook, of Braddock, Pennsylvania, had served an unknown amount of time in prison for the abuse of his son, and was arrested again on Thursday and charged with homicide in his son’s death. It is unclear why there was an apparent delay in the filing of charges.
