Boy, 8, dies after he is shot while sitting in mother’s car outside a nail salon

An eight-year-old boy has died after he was caught in a drive-by shooting while sitting in his mother’s parked car.

ABC 13 Houston reports that Tristian Hutchins, 8, died late last month after he was shot on March 1 when he and his sister were sitting in his mother’s parked car outside a southeast Houston nail salon. His sister, 5, was shot in the leg but survived.

After a weekslong investigation, Houston police arrested an 18-year-old man and charged him with the boy’s murder. Devonte Lockett is being held without bail and expected to face a judge on Monday morning.

Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo told ABC 13 that Lockett was a known gang member with a criminal history. In a press conference on Friday, Acevedo vowed to bring anyone else involved in the fatal shooting to justice and has asked for the public’s help in identifying additional suspects.

“Just know, we are not going to rest until we get everyone involved behind bars. But our best chances of doing that is the community itself to come forward,” Chief Acevedo said on Friday.

Tristian Hutchins was the 10th child to be killed by gun violence in Houston in the last year.
