A North Carolina woman is facing murder charges after authorities say she killed a man she met through a specialized dating website.
According to the New York Post, 57-year-old Sheri Williams Jones reported to the Cumberland County Detention Center earlier this week to surrender on charges related to the 2015 murder.
“When deputies arrived at the residence, they found Smith lying in the front yard motionless,” authorities revealed this week.
It was unclear from available reports why charges in the case were not filed earlier.
Authorities believe Jones fatally shot 61-year-old Clarence Smith, whom she met through a dating site called Farmers Only, after their relationship soured in 2015.
After she turned herself in on Monday, she reportedly claimed the homicide was in “self defense,” though additional details of the alleged circumstances were not immediately available.
The two reportedly dated for several months after they first met online. They split at some point prior to Smith’s death, though investigators did not indicate what caused the breakup.
On the day of his death, Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office reported that the suspect initially contacted Smith in an effort to convince him to pick up his belongings from her home.
“Jones said she is the one who shot him, it was self defense,” authorities revealed in an update this week.
She was booked into jail on Monday and is expected to face charges including murder and domestic violence.
