Remains found in search for 1-year-old boy whose mother was found dead on upstate New York farm

Authorities have found human remains “consistent” with a missing one-year-old boy five months after his mother’s dead body was discovered in the same area.

According to NYUp.com, Wayne County Sheriff Barry Virts confirmed that scattered human remains had been found in a 12-inch-grave on the same Sodus, New York, farm where Owen Hidalgo-Calderon’s mother Selena Hidalgo-Calderon was found dead in May, just after she and her son went missing.

The Democrat and Chronicle reports that Sheriff Virts said the remains found last week are consistent with a boy Owen’s age, but that a positive identification is still pending.

Selena’s remains were found shortly after she and her son went missing, and her boyfriend Everardo Donoteo-Reyes is currently in custody. An extensive, 12-day-search of the area turned up no signs of the one-year-old boy until last week, when searchers noticed scattered human remains that led them to a shallow grave.

“It’s my belief that Reyes buried him there and the disturbance we saw was from an animal digging at that site,” Virts said at a news conference on Tuesday, according to the Democrat and Chronicle.

“I just want to be clear, because some media outlets reported that we had stopped searching,” Virts added. “We never stopped investigating. We never quit.”

A motive for the apparent murders is not yet known, although Selena Hidalgo-Caldero had reportedly sought domestic violence crisis services in the past.
