Teen shoots self, 15-year-old best friend in apparent murder-suicide

A teen with apparent “chronic mental issues” and his school classmate were discovered dead Thursday night in an upscale Houston apartment in a suspected murder-suicide, according to authorities.

Awoman found the bodies of her son and his “best friend” when she returned to her apartment at The Park at River Oaks, police told the Houston Chronicle.

The boys were both 15 and were Lamar High School students, the newspaper reported.

Their names were not immediately released, and the report did give any identifying information on the victim or the suspect.

Houston police Assistant Chief Henry Gaw said the mother reported her son had recently been experiencing “chronic mental issues,” but otherwise seemed okay when she left the apartment earlier Thursday, the newspaper reported.

ABC13 reports that police located a gun inside the apartment, reportedly owned by a family member who resides there.

“It’s a very sad scene. You have two 15-year-olds who are dead,” Gaw told the television station.

Police are investigating a motive for the shooting and would not say whether suicide note has been located, according to ABC13.

The station also reported the Houston Independent School District issued a statement saying it is “saddened” by the suicides and will provide grief counselors for students and staff.
