‘The baby is turning blue!’ Hear the frantic 911 call made when a woman in vegetative state delivered baby, shocking staff at nursing facility

Police in Phoenix have released the 911 call made by staff at an Arizona health care facility after a woman who had been in a vegetative state for more than a decade — perhaps most of her life — went into labor and gave birth, before anyone at the facility noticed the 29-year-old woman was pregnant.

The patient at Hacienda HealthCare gave birth on December 29, reportedly to the shock of a staff member at the nursing facility who was in the room when the patient went into labor.

The 911 call, obtained by AZFamily.com, shows that the baby she delivered was in severe distress immediately after the birth, but the infant’s condition improved.

An identified nurse reportedly made the call, screaming: “The baby’s turning blue! The baby’s turning blue!”

The nurse remained on the phone with dispatchers while CPS was being performed on the baby, which started to become responsive about four minutes into the call. The nurse also told the dispatcher that no one at the facility knew the patient was pregnant.

Officers reportedly responded to the nursing facility, where “they found a woman in her 20s, who was incapacitated, who had delivered a baby. The baby was in distress. The woman and the baby were transported to a local hospital,” a police spokesperson told AZFamily.com.

The baby survived and is believed to be in the care of the woman’s family.

The 911 call prompted an investigation into the apparent rape of the patient, who, according to a new report, has been in a persistent vegetative state for much longer than previously indicated: People magazine obtained court documents from Maricopa County Superior Court showing that the woman had been at Hacienda HealthCare since she was 2 or 3 years old — significantly longer than sources had previously said she was in a persistent vegetative state; which had been reported as somewhere between ten and 14 years.

The People report also calls into question what led to the woman’s condition. Multiple reports had said the woman had been in the nursing facility because of a near-drowning incident that left her in a vegetative state. But the records showed that the patient is a quadriplegic, who had a seizure disorder and suffers from pneumonia.

Many questions remain about the patient’s history and how she was impregnated. The Phoenix police are reportedly gathering DNA samples from employees at Hacienda HealthCare in search for a suspect.
