Authorities in Missouri say a 25-year-old woman is behind bars after the death of her 2-year-old son on Friday.
According to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, Ebony Roby was reportedly driving her vehicle in the area of Jennings Station Road and Interstate 70 in the St. Louis area on Friday afternoon when the young boy fell from the car to his death on the road surface below.
It was unclear from available updates how Elijah Roby managed to fall from the vehicle or where he had been riding inside it.
A passing vehicle hit the young boy after he fell from his mother’s automobile. Ebony Roby allegedly picked her son up and carried him in the same car to a nearby service station where she contacted emergency personnel.
Upon the arrival of first responders, the child was transported to an area hospital where he was admitted in critical condition and pronounced dead a short time later.
The St. Louis County Police Department released a statement on Saturday confirming the toddler’s death and the arrest of his mother.
Investigators say the driver of the vehicle that hit Elijah Roby has been cooperative with law enforcement.
Ebony Roby was booked into jail with bond set at $50,000. The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office indicated she is expected to face criminal charges including child endangerment in the first degree.
The investigation remains ongoing and is being handled by the Bureau of Crimes Against Persons, as KMOV reports.
