Accused rapist Nathan Sutherland’s wife filed for divorce weeks before incapacitated patient gave birth

Just a few weeks before the woman he is now accused of raping gave birth, the wife of Hacienda HealthCare nurse Nathan Sutherland filed for divorce, after six years of marriage.

As CrimeOnline previously reported, Sutherland, 36, was arrested on Tuesday after a DNA sample implicated him in the sexual assault of a severely incapacitated patient, which resulted in a pregnancy and a birth late last month. He was charged with sexual assault and abuse of a vulnerable adult, and is being held on $500,000 cash bail.

Sutherland was a licensed practical nurse at the facility, and police reportedly said he was the primary caregiver to the 29-year-old patient when she became pregnant. According to AZCentral.com, Sutherland was married at the time he took the job in 2012, but his wife filed for divorce on December 5, 2018. The patient would give birth on December 29, but the report does not indicate what prompted the divorce filings.

According to court records obtained by AZCentral.com, Sutherland’s estranged wife asked that her address not be included in the divorce petition because of previous harassment from Sutherland’s ex-wife and her mother.

Sutherland was fired from Hacienda HealthCare immediately after his arrest.
