A police officer in Louisiana died after a pickup truck crashed into a motorcycle he was driving during a funeral procession.

WMTV reports that Cpl. Shane Totty of the Baton Rouge Police Department was killed on Friday afternoon while he was riding a motorcycle as an escort in a funeral procession. Totty, 31, was a four-year veteran of the force.

Citing the Advocate, the report notes that Totty had survived a shooting while he was responding to a call last February. According to the report, the suspect, a mentally ill man, shot through the windshield of Totty’s vehicle, hitting the officer in the face.

According to Fox News, Totty was a new father to a baby girl and was planning his wedding at the time of his death. The truck involved in the crash had reportedly pulled out of an apartment complex just before hitting Totty’s motorcycle.

The Baton Rouge Police Department announced the tragedy on the department’s Facebook page.

“BRPD Cpl. Shane Totty, 31, succumbed from his traffic crash injuries late this afternoon at a local hospital. Please continue to keep the Totty family and our department in your prayers,” the post reads.
