Boyfriend of Jessica Chambers, cheerleader burned alive in her car, shot dead in her hometown

The man believed to be the boyfriend of Jessica Chambers at the time of her brutal murder was shot dead in his Mississippi home.

The Associated Press reports that Travis Sanford was shot and killed at his home in Courtland, where Chambers lived her entire life until her burning death in 2014. Chambers, 19, and Sanford, 33, were in a relationship when Chambers was found burned alive in her car by paramedics in December 2014, and later died of her severe burn injuries.

Sanford was reportedly questioned in the investigation but was incarcerated at the time of her murder. Quinton Tellis, who had recently become friendly with Chambers before her death, was later charged with her murder but has not been convicted following two mistrials in which both juries deadlocked. A key argument in Tellis’s defense is that multiple first responders testified that Chambers said the name “Eric” when asked who had done this to her.

The Associated Press report does not indicate whether authorities have a lead on the suspect who shot Sanford at his home on Friday morning, while his wife and children were present. The suspect was reportedly seen fleeing the home on foot around 7:30 a.m. on Friday.
