Woman shoots roommate dead inside home, tells her mom her gun fired accidentally while she was cleaning it: Cops

Authorities in Georgia say one woman is dead and another behind bars following a shooting at a residence near Atlanta over the weekend.

According to the New York Post, 43-year-old Dixie Cowe died shortly after arriving at an area hospital on Saturday evening.

A roommate, 26-year-old Keely Kilpatrick, reportedly told her mother that she was cleaning her gun when it fired and fatally struck the victim.

A police statement indicated that she gave the account of an accidental discharge when her mother, who was at the home, ran to check on the situation after hearing a “loud noise like a gunshot.”

Records show the suspect has a lengthy criminal history with a rap sheet dating back nearly a decade and Saturday’s arrest marked her third so far this year. Previous run-ins with the law included arrests for driving under the influence, drug possession, and possessing a gun or knife while committing or attempting to commit a felony.

Her friend Brianna Johnson, however, told local reporters that she believes Kilpatrick accidentally shot her roommate on Saturday.

As of the latest updates available, Kilpatrick remained behind bars at a detention center without bond, as reported by WSB. She is expected to face a criminal charge of involuntary manslaughter.
