College volleyball player dies in fall from cliff while taking a photo: Report

A college junior died in a fall from a cliff while hiking in Arkansas.

The Sioux City Journal reports that Andrea Norton was fatally injured when she fell from a rocky cliff while on a hike with friends in Jasper.

Norton, 20, was a junior at Briar Cliff University and played for the women’s volleyball team. She reportedly went hiking on Saturday with a group of college students to Ozark-St. Francis National Forest.

According to the report, Norton was “re-positioning herself for a photo” when she fell from the Hawksbill Crag, plunging about 100 feet.

The Briar Cliff volleyball team acknowledged the tragic loss in a tweet, which reportedly read, “#22 on the courts, #1 in our hearts. Thank you for the prayers, calls, texts and emails.”

Newton County Sheriff Glenn Wheeler told the Sioux City Journal that several people have died in the same area where Norton was killed, and that it is among the most photographed hiking areas in the state.

On the same weekend of Norton’s death, a Fordham University senior died after falling from a clocktower on the New York City campus.
