Three children among those shot when police open fire on Pizza Hut robbery suspect: Reports

Authorities in Oklahoma say three children were among those injured when officers opened fire in an attempt to capture a robbery suspect.

According to ABC News, police spotted 21-year-old William Devaughn Smith in Hugo on Friday morning. He was wanted in connection with a robbery at a local Pizza Hut earlier this year.

Smith was one of four people — and the only adult — reportedly shot when officers opened fire in an attempt to “make contact” with the suspect.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation reported that Smith was with his wife and four children in a vehicle at the time. The suspect and three injured children were reportedly transported to an area hospital. His wife and one of the children escaped injury.

Early reports that two children were shot were updated to include a third juvenile injured, as reported by NBC News.

Initial reports did not include the condition of the children. Smith was reportedly released from the hospital and police in nearby Paris, Texas, took him into custody.

Police reports indicate he is expected to face criminal charges related to the robbery on April 11. He is accused of entering the restaurant through a rear door and approaching an employee, placing an object into the individual’s back and demanding money.
