A Utah couple in their twenties both died when the man fatally shot himself in the head before a round from the gunshot hit the woman in the neck.
The Deseret News reports that Ethan Larry Bertrum Timoko, 27, and Nakylee Hope Marvin, 24, both died early Saturday morning while camping at Payson Canyon.
Utah County Sheriff’s Sgt. Spencer Cannon told the news outlet that officers responded to a call of someone being shot at about 12:30 a.m., and found Timoko dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, while Marvin was shot in the neck. The woman was critically injured and taken to a hospital for treatment, where she was later pronounced dead.
The sheriff’s office said in a statement obtained by the Deseret News that Timoko and Marvin had been seen arguing, and that Tomiko was sitting in a vehicle talking to Marvin, who was standing outside of the car, when he put a handgun to his head, pulling the trigger. A round from the gunfire then hit Marvin in the neck.
According to the report, an unidentified man and two girls were with the couple on the camping trip, and that all three were unhurt. A statement on the GoFundMe campaign page created to help Marvin’s family says that her 5-year-old daughter was present during the fatal shooting. The statement also says that Timoko was Marvin’s boyfriend.
Police are reportedly treating Marvin’s death as accidental.
